Welcome to Silvermines

A village of heritage, nature, and community in County Tipperary.

Silvermines, historically known as Bellagowan (Irish: Béal Átha Gabhann), is a village in County Tipperary, Ireland. Nestled north of the Silvermine mountain range, the area is named after centuries of mining for lead, zinc, copper, baryte, and silver nearby. These mines shaped the landscape and community, leaving a legacy of industrial heritage alongside natural beauty. To the south rises Keeper Hill (Sliabh Cimeálta), the highest peak in the range at 695m. Its summit offers panoramic views across Munster, making it a popular destination for hikers. Silvermines lies near the town of Nenagh on the R499 regional road, and is part of the historic barony of Ormond Upper.

⚒️ Mining Heritage

Mining has been central to Silvermines for centuries. Lead and zinc extraction left behind shafts, adits, and tailings dams, many of which can still be seen today. Interpretive panels along the Mining Heritage Trail explain the history of these sites, offering visitors a glimpse into the industrial past that gave the village its name.

🌳 Nature & Walking

Beyond its industrial past, Silvermines is a walker’s paradise. Woodland trails at Knockanroe Woods provide shaded paths, wildlife encounters, and picnic spots, while the climb to Keeper Hill rewards with sweeping views. The village also connects to wider walking and cycling routes, linking to Nenagh, Lough Derg, and the Slieve Felim Way.

🏡 Community & Parish

Silvermines is not only a place of natural beauty but also a living parish community. The village church, community centre, and local groups host events throughout the year, welcoming parishioners and visitors alike. Whether exploring heritage, enjoying nature, or connecting with locals, Silvermines offers a warm and memorable experience.
