🏛️ Historic Buildings of Silvermines

Silvermines, County Tipperary, is a parish steeped in history. Its buildings reflect centuries of faith, industry, and community life. From churches and schools to mining structures and farmhouses, each site tells a story of resilience and heritage.

⛪ Our Lady of Lourdes Church

Constructed in the 1970s, Our Lady of Lourdes Church is the spiritual heart of Silvermines. Its cruciform design, stained-glass windows, and belfry make it a distinctive landmark. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes and is one of only two in the Killaloe Diocese named after St. Bernadette. It has hosted countless baptisms, weddings, funerals, and parish celebrations, embodying the faith and continuity of the community.

📚 Silvermines National School

The original school building served the parish for generations, providing education and community focus. In 2012, a new modern school was built on the same site, replacing the old structure while continuing its legacy. The new school combines contemporary facilities with the historic significance of its location, ensuring that the tradition of learning in Silvermines remains strong.

🏭 Mining Heritage Structures

Silvermines’ industrial past is visible in the remains of mining buildings, shafts, and adits. The Mogul mine, opened in the 1960s, was one of the largest zinc mines in Europe, while the Magcobar baryte mine operated until 1993. Housing estates were built for Canadian engineers and their families, leaving a cultural imprint on the parish. Though many structures are now ruins, they testify to Silvermines’ role in Ireland’s mining history. Conservation efforts continue to stabilize and preserve these sites.

🏡 Traditional Farmhouses & Cottages

Scattered throughout the parish are traditional stone farmhouses and cottages. With slate roofs, whitewashed walls, and simple layouts, these buildings reflect the rural character of Silvermines. Many are still in use, while others stand as heritage markers of agricultural life in the parish.

🎭 Silvermines Community Centre

Originally known as Silvermines Parochial Hall, this building was constructed in 1951 as a central venue for parish life. For decades it hosted concerts, drama productions, fundraising events, and parish meetings, becoming a cornerstone of community activity in the village.

Over the last twenty years, however, the hall fell into disrepair. Despite its decline, it remained a symbol of parish heritage and many remembered its role in shaping community life. Local groups and parishioners continued to advocate for its renewal.

In 2024, the hall was officially renamed the Silvermines Community Centre, reflecting its broader role as a hub for parish and local initiatives. Plans are now in place for restoration and revitalisation, which will modernise the building while preserving its historic character. Once completed, the renovated centre will provide improved facilities for parishioners and visitors, ensuring its role as a vibrant hub of community life for generations to come.

⛰️ Keeper Hill Landmarks

While not a building, Keeper Hill (Sliabh Cimeálta) dominates the Silvermines landscape. At 695m, it is the highest peak in the Silvermines Mountains and has long been a natural landmark associated with the parish’s identity. Historic paths and markers around the hill connect the community to its natural heritage.

📖 Preservation & Memory

The Silvermines Historical Society, founded in 2012, plays a vital role in preserving the parish’s built heritage. Through publications such as Mining the Past, they document stories of miners, families, and the evolution of local buildings. Their work ensures that the legacy of Silvermines’ historic structures is not forgotten.

📝 Notes

The historic buildings of Silvermines tell a story of faith, industry, and community. From churches and schools to mining structures and farmhouses, each site is a chapter in the parish’s living heritage, inviting visitors and parishioners alike to reflect on the resilience and spirit of this unique village.
